The poor man's Pulsar P2

The word "tribute" is perhaps charitable since in the last two photographs you can see that the shape and size of the two watches is very similar. "Copy" might be a more appropriate word.

The Fossil 2002 Series of Retro LED Watches

In 2001, Fossil came out with about a half dozen different styles of retro LED watches, all using the same module. These watches were all manufactured in China. The Fossil LED 2002 series of watches use two buttons on the right side of the case. The upper button displays the time and the lower button displays the date. The time is shown as hours and minutes only, with no capability of showing seconds. Unlike other LED watches, the display is illuminated only as long as the button is depressed. This makes it impossible to photograh these watches without having a finger in the picture. The modern electronics for this watch seem to be extremely reliable and use a high performance lithium battery that is rated for one year but seems to be able to last several years with light use.

It's impossible to discuss this watch without comparing it directly to the Pulsar P2. You'll notice that they are almost the same size with the Fossil being slightly squarer and less curvy in shape. The Fossil is also significantly heavier than the Pulsar P2. In terms of quality, the Fossil is a very respectable watch and stands up well against the P2, although the edges are perhaps a hair less sharp. As shown in the last photograph, the main difference between the two is in the quality of the display. The size and brightness of the digits of the Pulsar display leave the Fossil in the dust when viewed side by side. The digits on the Fossil are considerably smaller and also use tiny lenses over each digit which make the display a little difficult to read from the side.

The Pulsar P2 was a landmark in horological history and a watch that most watch lovers would love to own. However, to buy a P2 today can cost between $300 and $600 and you may end up with a watch that's not so reliable. If you're looking for a no-nonsense, inexpensive, durable, reliable watch that has great 70s style and captures the essence of the Pulsar P2, then the Fossil JR-7770 is the watch for you.

Condition:

Case: Excellent.
This JR-7770 is in excellent, almost minty condition. There is only one very tiny scratch to the left of the display and some minor scratches on the case back and clasp.

Face / Hands: Excellent.
All LED digits and segments are complete.

Crystal: Excellent.
The acrylic time screen is smooth and clear with no visible scratches or nicks.

Band / Bracelet: Excellent.
The bracelet is in almost perfect condition, has all of its links and will fit a full size 8" wrist comfortably.

Function / Accuracy: Excellent.
All functions work perfectly. Digital quartz accuracy.
