Bulova Asymmetic Accutron 214

A classic with the dial from the original Accutron 214 "Alpha".

Description:

This very elegant black and white gold Accutron 214 features an asymmetric case and the fantastic dial pattern used in the original Accutron "Alpha" models. This model features a wealth of fine texture detail, from the concentric grooves on the dial to the fine crosshatching pattern on the front bezel. In the light, this Accutron shines with the sparkles from its silvery dial markers contrasting nicely against the dark black face.

1964 Accutron 214 Advertisement

This model uses the world's first tuning fork movement, the 214, which was instroduced in 1960. The 214 movement is set using a dial on the back of the case rther than a conventional crown, which allows the watch case to be beautifully simple and uncluttered. These early 214 Accutrons tend to be coveted by collectors even though no 214 movements ever included a calendar or day/date mechanism.

An Accutron 214 currently sits on the surface of the moon, left there in 1969 by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the crew of Apollo 11. Despite the success and popularity of the Accutron, it couldn't compete with quartz on the basis of low price and accuracy and ceased production in 1977.

Condition:

Case: Very good.
This watch is in very good condition with only fine marks visible on the polished areas of the front bezel.

Face / Hands: Very good
The face and hands are in very good condition. There is a slight amount of aging visible in the photos which is invisible to the eye. The only visible flaw in the dial is that the tiny luminenscent markers at 2:00 and 3:00 are missing.

Crystal: Excellent.
No visible scuffs or scratches.

Band / Bracelet: Very good.
There's nothing particularly special about the black leather band (not original), but it's a decent band and matches the black face nicely.

Function / Accuracy: Excellent.
This watch is It's humming strongly and keeps excellent Accutron-quality time.
