Bulova Accutron 2182 Square Case

An uber rare Accutron with a bit of Omega styling

Description:

This very rare Accutron from 1974 features a distinctive round cornered square case and an elegant, minimalist metallic blue dial.

At a first glance, you might expect that this Accutron would use a miniature 23 movement like most of the other square men's models from the mid to late 1970s. However, this model uses the more popular and robust 218 movement!

This Accutron has really nice finishing with a combination of machined and polished surfaces. The sides of the case have very nice machining marks except for the tiny little bevelled edges which have polished surfaces.

Accutrons ceased production in 1977 because quartz watches could be made more inexpensively and more accurately. Although the early Accutrons tend to be more coveted by collectors, the late model Accutrons have that great 70s style, of which this is a perfect example.

This model is a great size and weight. It's noticeably more substantial than standard round faced Accutrons but not too heavy and has a very comfortable bracelet. The dial has fine horizontal brushed lines and a metallic blue sheen that is difficult to capture photographically but looks smashing in the sun. In addition, the watch crystal is slightly domed instead of flat and seems to magnify the face ever so slightly.

This Accutron uses the 2182 movement which features the day and date. One nice thing about the 2182 movement is that the day and date click over sharply at midnight rather than changing slowly over several minutes like most other movements. If you listen closely, you can hear the date tick over at midnight!

Condition:

Other than the engraving on the clasp, this unusual Accutron is almost perfect!

Case: Excellent.
The case and case back are almost perfect with no visible marks.

Face / Hands: Excellent.
The dial, and hands are in almost perfect condition. The Tritium on the dial and hands no longer glows continuously (half life of only 12.3 years), but the phosphor still glows for a short time after exposure to light.

Crystal: Excellent.
The acrylic crystal on this Accutron is near perfect with no visible scuffs or scratches.

Band / Bracelet: Very good.
The bracelet on this Accutron is very comfortable and feels sleek on the wrist. The Duchess bracelet is complete and fits up to a giant sized 8.5" wrist. The bracelet would be considered mint except for the fact that the clasp is (rather poorly) engraved with the initials of the former owner.

Function / Accuracy: Excellent.
This watch runs and sets perfectly and keeps excellent Accutron quality time. The calendar snaps over precisely after midnight with a satisfyingly audible "click".
